Bench ReDo

Tell me I’m not the only one that has multiple projects on the go that are only half-completed…I finally tackled a project that I have been meaning to do for months but just hadn’t found the time for.

I recently compiled a list of “projects” that I would like to start/finish before the end of the year. It’s not a “to-do” list (if you missed my post on why I don’t make “to-do” lists you can read it here) but rather something to look at on a day where I have some extra time (wait, do those exist?) to tackle a fun project.

I have had a bench sitting in my front foyer for months that I have been wanting to redo.

There is a lot sentiment behind this piece which I will share more about in another post, but I had to be careful with how I tackled this project. The entire top portion of the bench is made out of burned matchsticks. It’s quite amazing actually.

06577C59-1313-433D-9580-82ECE2337BBAIMG_8867

Thousands and thousands of burned matchsticks, glued together to make a beautiful piece of furniture. For this reason, I had to be so careful with how I sanded the top of the bench. I only wanted to strip a thin layer of the Varathane off, without damaging the matches. I sanded the legs (a little more abrasively), followed by the top and sides.

9151D600-265F-47AD-8619-99B55976A030ECBBC7E2-3871-426E-9FCC-D174CAF65F31B854C6C6-898B-4739-A55E-6730BB229720

As you can see, I had some extra little hands help me with the sanding.

For the legs, I used Rust-Oleum Chalked Ulta Matte Paint in the shade Country Grey. I love how this paint goes on and how quickly it dries. I have shared it before on my Instagram Stories, and all the different colour options.

IMG_8866IMG_8869

I used two coats on the legs, and allowed 30 minutes of drying time between coats.

09819E24-AA00-47B4-B067-E6880D1CF5CF

Then I flipped the table over so I could stain the top.

I chose a grey Varathane Wood Stain for the top. I couldn’t use the chalk paint on the seat because it would have covered/filled all of the details of the matches, so I chose a wood stain.

IMG_8870.JPG

A little goes a long way, so I applied a thin layer across the bench – using long even strokes with the paint brush.

E05A03A3-A45C-47E6-82C4-42597BA3065B7E363F4F-FB39-4875-A982-B5012897C5B0

Then, I took a rag and wiped off any excess stain, which also helps it seep into all of the grooves in the wood.

16112CB4-0F6D-4DE5-A4C1-F0D0E2D67218C04D4913-38F1-443B-9DF7-342EED44C4C55B6E1EA8-BDF7-48A1-BA8E-4B7F12DE56A3

If you choose to not wipe off the excess stain, you may find it will remain sticky for a long period of time and it won’t have a smooth finish (speaking from past experience).

I decided I wanted to distress the legs of the bench to pull out some of the original wood. I think it really tied the whole piece together.

This is what I ended up with!

IMG_8840IMG_8835

You can see the stain on the top is a very subtle hue of grey but it made such a difference in the overall look.

I am so pleased with how it turned out and I love this piece even more now!

Minecraft Party: Maxton Turns Seven

A few weeks ago Maxton turned seven and we celebrated with a Minecraft themed party. He loves video games right now and that was his gamer theme of choice. I had a few ideas on what I wanted to do for the party, most of it just came from watching Maxton play the game; and asking him what characters he wanted to see incorporated into the party.

He asked for Herobrine, a Creeper, Pig and TNT. Everything in the world of Minecraft is very geometrical, so I figured it would be fairly easy.

IMG_8806

The sign and balloons I purchased from Party City and the “Max” portion of the sign I made myself.

I found some shoe boxes and used construction paper to transform them into TNT, a Creeper and Herobrine.

IMG_8812.JPG

I asked Maxton if he wanted to do a “Pin the tail on the Pig” and he thought it was a funny idea so I purchased some bristol board and glued a pig made out of pieces of construction paper onto it.

IMG_8767

He actually turned out pretty cute and it was so easy to do!

I purchased plain green paper bags for the gift bags, and just cut out black pieces of construction paper to glue on to them to turn them into little creepers.

The cake I had made by a home-based cake decorator and she did a fantastic job! I was so pleased with how it turned out; and it tasted amazing! It was a chocolate cake, at Maxton’s request.

I love planing the kids birthday parties and I am always excited to see what theme they choose each year.

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits: Instalment Five

This is the fifth and final instalment in my “Transition from Summer to Fall Outfit” series. Today is all about scarves!

Scarves are a great accessory for Fall and can add so much colour to a simple outfit. I picked my two favourite scarves for Fall and I’m showing you three different outfits to style the scarves with. You can use a lightweight, midweight or heavyweight scarf, depending on the day and the temperature.

Scarves are also a great option if you’re not comfortable with wearing large prints, but still want to add texture or colour to your outfit.

IMG_8446.JPG

This midweight scarf is the perfect accessory for a solid coloured dress. It adds both warmth and colour, and this particular scarf comes in four other colours.

You can shop the look here:

Don’t be afraid to wear a scarf with your favourite Fall tee. You will probably want to stick with one that is either lightweight or midweight if you’re pairing it with a tee.

IMG_8449

Notice anything else? Yup. I paired a scarf with white denim pants! I told you, I love pulling white into the Fall, especially with a cute pair of booties!

Shop this look here:

I also loving pairing a heavyweight scarf with my favourite cardigan. I love the pattern of this particular scarf and it comes in four other colours. Again, carrying white pants into chilly fall days.

The colour scheme of this outfit is very neutral, but the mauve in the scarf adds some colour to the look. Again, a scarf is the perfect opportunity to add colour to an outfit.

DIY Fall Wreath

A few years back, on my old blog, I shared a Fall DIY wreath that ended up being featured on Michael’s Pinterest page; so I was pretty proud of myself at the time. This year, I decided I would make two new wreaths, because my hunt for ones I loved, left me empty-handed.

I actually took off all the decor from my old wreath so I could reuse it, and then just picked up another one from Michaels.

front2.jpg

They are just basic 18” wreaths and are under $8.

91C44862-A7F5-40D9-836E-29175DB5AB87 (1)

The faux flowers and greenery I used for the wreaths were all purchased from Michaels. They can be expensive so watch for sales or use their weekly coupons. I lucked out and got all of mine when they had a “buy one get one free” sale on all of their faux fall arrangements.

I also find it easier to shop if you have a colour palette in mind. For me, I wanted to stick with green, white and peachy tones with some subtle hues of burgundy or deep purple. Pinterest is a great place to start to get some inspiration if you’re unsure. So, with that palette in mind I grabbed different types of flowers, some individual and a couple bouquets. I always purchase more than I need so I can play around, and then return what I don’t use afterwards.

pallette

I brought everything home and laid everything out, so I could get a clear visual of what I had to work with, and just started to play around. It took me about a half an hour of re-arranging and adding/removing flowers before my vision came to life.

E8FB16E6-5ABC-405C-8780-CCAD6B671C4C

Depending on the type of flowers you chose, and the length of the stems, you can weave them through the wreath itself, without having to glue anything. If you have smaller flowers or blossoms that don’t have stems, you can just use a glue gun and glue them on. For these wreaths, I was able to just weave everything through without having to use a glue gun.

EDFB3C48-D13D-48B2-AD5B-0963A609C5DB

That’s all there is to it! It’s much more affordable to make your own and you get exactly what you’re looking for. You can also change it up, or add to it year to year if your taste changes.

I hope this brought you a little fall inspiration!

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits: Instalment Four

We have all heard that you’re not supposed to wear white after labour day. I’m not sure who came up with this “rule” but I don’t follow it. I love a good ol’ pair of white distressed denim jeans with a nice big cardi and cute pair of booties in the fall.

So for this week’s instalment? You guessed it. How to transition white pants into your fall wardrobe; and I’m showing you how with my favourite distressed denim pair.

8E1479A6-5C04-4449-BCB0-7ABDF95496FC

I love the look of brown on white. Pairing them with this rust coloured waffle henley and a cute pair of booties is a great look for fall.

One of my favourite things to pair with distressed white denim pants is a big soft cardi. This luxe tank I wore all through the summer and this cardi I purchased from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale.

Back to School with Mabel’s Labels

Where did the summer go?! I can’t believe the kids are back to school tomorrow.

Today is all about getting everything ready to go: backpacks, shoes, school supplies… which means labelling all of these items too.

I have been using Mabel’s Labels since Maxton started daycare. A friend gifted me some on his first birthday and I loved them! I have continued ordering them ever since.

9E357345-E7E9-4C75-9F23-503DB53A2302

They have so many different options and designs it’s so hard to choose! They have labels for all ages and you can shop what you’re looking for by their suggested categories:  school, daycare, camp, university, new baby or travel.

I love their Ultimate Back-to-School Combo because it has everything I need to label all of their items for school. The combo pack includes

  • 40 Mini Custom Name Stickers: 38mm x 8mm (1-1/2″ x 5/16″)
  • 70 Tag Mates™ Stick On Clothing Labels: 21mm x 10mm (13/16″ x 3/8″)
  • 16 Custom Shoe Stickers (8 pairs): 33mm (1.3″)
  • 2 Personalized Mini Tags: 30mm x 20mm (1-1/4″ x 3/4″)

This combo is $42 which is such a great price considering what is included, and how long the pack will last.

1D5A3E18-8F5F-4202-B214-F946D841BB60

All labels are dishwasher safe, microwave safe and waterproof. The clothing labels have never peeled, no matter how many times they have gone through the washer and dryer. I love that I can label their school containers and not have to worry about the labels lifting at the corners after going through the dishwasher.

124FA063-BFC6-4988-BA6B-DF19B218FE7CDSC_0827DSC_0839AAAF1C2A-B02A-404E-8E62-684C56F7C160

They have so many designs, styles and fonts to choose from. I chose the hockey design for Maxton, and the mermaid design for Everly.

5A44A34D-161A-4FC8-BDCC-E84F1D39176C 264853CD2-96E9-48EA-B0BF-9B8036C811C5D7E7C5A6-52A3-43C6-BC6A-446AF0B77E14

I get a little label happy this time of year, but how can you not with all of their labeling options? They even introduced a new Custom Clothing Stamp that lasts approximately 50 washes and the stamp lasts approximately 1000 applications. I love this idea!

You can shop for your Mabel’s Labels here, and use coupon code PINKANDBLUE for 10% off of your order!
