Summer to Fall Transition Outfits: Instalment Three

This is probably my favourite instalment in this series thus far! I looove sweatshirts! I found three lightweight sweatshirts that are perfect for transitioning your wardrobe from summer to fall. None of them are heavy, material wise and they all look super cute with a pair or shorts or pants!

These outfits are great for cooler nights or when you still aren’t ready to pack away your favourite shorts.

My favourite sweatshirt out of the three has to be this camo one. It comes in seven other colours and it’s currently on sale for 40% off. I love it paired with a pair of distressed denim shorts and cute sneakers; but it would also look great with a pair of leggings too.

I will definitely have to grab it in another colour or two.

Shop it here:

I have shared with you before how I have been loving red lately, so when I saw this sweatshirt I knew I had to have it.

It does come in other colours and is super soft. Again, it looks cute with a pair of denim shorts, but would also look great with a pair of jeans on a chillier day.

It’s sold out in red because the sweatshirt is currently on sale for $13! So hurry and grab one in another colour before they are all sold out!

I purchased this sweater in the spring and I wore it until the weather was too warm for long sleeves. I love how lightweight it is and the length is perfect.

I like the raw cut edging of it and it reminds me of sweatshirts I wore as a kid. I have worn it with both shorts and leggings. It washes really well and doesn’t pill, and it’s currently on sale for under $24.

It comes in four other colours including olive which is a perfect colour for fall.

Home Sense Fall Finds

In the Spring I did a blog post with some of my favourite home decor finds for Spring from Home Sense. (If you missed it and wanted to check it out click here.)

I was at Home Sense the other day and realized I was surrounded by Fall decor (insert tears) and thought it would be a great time to pull together a similar post for Fall. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Fall. Crisp days, bulky warm sweaters and all of the beautiful colours, but at the same time I am in no rush to let go of summer.

FullSizeRender 3

It’s only been in the last couple of years that I really started decorating for Fall (aside from outdoor planters and a wreath for the front door). I do have a September 1st rule though; I won’t put anything out for Fall until then. That’s just me; to each their own. As for Halloween decor, I only add a few items throughout the house and won’t put any of it out until a week or two before Halloween.

I have to say the one thing I was really disappointed in was their selection of Fall wreaths. I will keep an eye out as September approaches but I am thinking I will do another DIY wreath for Fall. I did one several years ago and shared it on my old blog; Michaels Craft Store also featured it on their Pinterest page, but I will share more on that at a later date. πŸ™‚

I found a lot of really cute items for Fall and picked a few of my favourites to share with you.

I love all the cute colours and textures of gourds this year! I think these three grouped together would look really nice on a sideboard or table. Mixing textures and colours is what Fall is all about. Don’t be afraid to play around!
(Twig Gourd $16.99; Green Ceramic Gourd $19.99; Cream Velvet Gourd $9.99)

I loved the look of this candle holder. I envisioned one on each side of my front doors, so these came home with me. There are three different sizes ranging in price from $24.99 to $39.99. I chose two in the middle size which were $29.99. Another thing I liked about them was their versatility. They aren’t something to only be used in the Fall, you could use them on a patio in the Summer as well.

You could also pair two different sized ones and add a faux pumpkin or even a real orange or white pumpkin. If I was to pair two different sized ones together I would add a larger white pumpkin and a few smaller orange gourds around them.
(Grey Pumpkin $34.99)

Faux wheat seems to be a big trend in terms of faux plants for Fall. Personally, I am not a big fan, but when I paired this particular item with a few other things, I really liked the look pulled together.

These would look nice grouped together on a table at the front entryway of your home.
(Bronze Wooden Pumpkin $12.99; Faux Wheat Planter $16.99; Grey & Copper Gourd: $6.99)

Wooden crates are also a big trend this Fall. There were a lot of really cute ones, some plain and some with words or phrases. This would be great for storing items at the front door or in a mudroom.
(Wooden Crate $19.99)

I LOVED this little table centrepiece. I loved the textures of the faux plants, the little white gourds and the tin planter. This would be perfect on your table for Thanksgiving Dinner, and if you have a longer table, you could even use two, if you space them out.
(Faux Flower Box $19.99)

Last but not least, I pulled together a quick table setting to provide you with some inspiration for Thanksgiving Dinner. (Don’t mind the wrapped napkins. Hehe.)

Something simple and classy, yet modern. You may see some of these items incorporated into my Thanksgiving table this year. I loved the wicker placemats paired with classic white plates. Although these plates are both solid white, the pattern difference in the two adds both texture and dimension. Finish off the setting with a napkin that incorporates Fall colours and you have the perfect Fall table setting.
(Set of 8 Grey Wicker Placemats $14.99; Large Plate $4.99; Small Plate $6.99; Set of 6 Napkins: $12.99)

I hope this provided you with some inspiration for Fall home decor!

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits: Instalment Two

My first instalment in this series seemed to be a hit so I think I am going to run with it and keep this up!

For the first instalment, I showed you how to transition a jersey-knit sleeveless dress and a neutral straw bag from summer to fall.

In this instalment I am keeping with the theme of transitioning summer dresses to fall but adding some extra fall pieces including a different bag.

I really loved red this summer and typically I am not someone who wears a lot of red. Especially red lipstick, but for some reason this summer I was all over it. I loved it so much, I wanted to make sure I could incorporate it into my fall wardrobe without having to go out and buy new pieces.

If you have a colour you loved this summer, don’t be afraid to carry it through to your fall wardrobe.

Transitioning this dress into fall was easy. I added a cardigan, booties and fall coloured bag.

This cognac coloured backpack is a perfect transition piece and is so affordable. I love that you can wear it with something more dressy (as above) or more casual. This is a perfect example of how important versatile items are, and how I like to incorporate into my wardrobe.

Chocolate Banana Smoothie Popsicles

It always seems like I have a large amount of overripe bananas that end up in the freezer. I can only make so much banana bread/muffins so I like to use them in smoothies too.

For a treat one day I made the kids chocolate banana smoothies which later turned into smoothie popsicles. You can make smoothie popsicles with pretty much anything you like, but this one was a big hit.

2 frozen bananas
2 tbsp cocoa powder
2 cups milk

1. Add frozen bananas, cocoa powder and milk into blender and blend until smooth and desired consistency is reached. Add more milk if required.

2. Coat inside Β of popsicle containers with chocolate syrup

3. Pour blended mixture into containers

4. Freeze for 8+ hours

Someone couldn’t resist testing them out before I was done taking pictures. πŸ™‚

This recipe is quick and easy and is on repeat throughout the summer in our house!

Summer to Fall Transition Outfits: Instalment One

A change in season brings a major shift in wardrobe. Cooler temperatures means long pants and long sleeves; but that doesn’t mean you have to move all of your summer pieces to the back of your closet.

The purpose of this series is to help you transition some of your favourite summer pieces into your fall wardrobe. It’s great to have those pieces that can be staple items throughout each season. What I mean by staple items: distressed jeans, plain dresses, solid tees, blazers, etc.

For the first instalment of this series I am going to show you how to transition a jersey-knit sleeveless dress and a neutral straw bag from summer to fall.

This look for summer is so basic and simple and can easily be carried into fall.

See? A basic cardigan and a pair of booties easily made this dress a part of my fall wardrobe. This brown spice cardigan also ties in well with the beige straw bag.

Unicorn Party: Everly Turns Five

Just before last Christmas Everly told me she wanted a unicorn themed party for her birthday. I assumed because her birthday wasn’t for another seven months she would change her mind; but she didn’t. :p

Lucky for me, unicorns are trending in a big way right now so it wasn’t hard to pull things together for the party. I got most of the party accessories from Home Sense, Winners and Party City.

Her cake was made by someone I know who has a small cake business and she has been doing the kids cakes for years now. (I am great with cupcakes but not so much with fondant themed cakes. Hehe.) I sent her a picture of what I wanted, and she replicated it exactly. Everly loved the cake and couldn’t wait to get her hands on the unicorn horn.

The backdrop was all purchased from Home Sense and I love that I can re-use everything. The loot bags and “I’d Rather Be A Unicorn” cutlery holder were also purchased from Home Sense.

The plates, hats, cups, blowers, balloons and one of a kind sign were all purchased from Party City.

I LOVE planning the kids birthdays and look forward to it every year. The kids birthdays are three weeks apart so it can get a bit crazy planning them back to back.

I can honestly say this is probably the first year I haven’t turned to Pinterest for some ideas. I had a few things in mind that I wanted to do and just kept everything else simple. Β  Don’t get me wrong though, I love a good Pinterest find.

In a perfect world event planning in something I would love to take up on the side, but there are barely enough hours in the day as it is. For now I will just stick to planning my kids birthday parties.

If you are planning a unicorn party, I hope this offered you some inspiration!

Summer Salsa

If you are looking for a quick recipe to bring to your next BBQ this summer, I’ve got you covered. This salsa is so easy to make and it tastes delicious! It’s on repeat in my fridge all summer long.

1 can summer sweet corn, drained and rinsed
1 can black beans, drained and rinsed
1/2 medium red onion, diced
1 red pepper, diced
1 pint cherries tomatoes, diced
1/2 cup chopped cilantro
Juice of half a lemon
Juice of a full lime
1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
3 tbsp balsamic vinegar
3 tbsp red wine vinegar
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper

1. In a large bowl, combine red onion, red pepper and cherry tomatoes. Sprinkle with salt, pepper and garlic powder. Mix.
2. Add lemon and lime juice and mix.
3. Add black beans and corn, mix together.
4. Add olive oil, balsamic vinegar and red wine vinegar; mix well.
5. Add cilantro and mix well.

Refrigerate for 4-6 hours before serving (overnight is even better).

Serve with your favourite corn chips (I like the Tostitos Scoops!).
